The ERC Starting Grant is a European Research Council award for early-career researchers (2–7 years post-PhD) with an excellent research track record. It funds frontier, investigator-driven research in any scientific field at a European host institution. The PI must be employed by the host institution, which can be a university, research center, or private company with a research mission. ERC grants are not startup grants per se, but successful projects frequently generate IP and spin-off companies. The grant covers up to €1.5M over 5 years (up to €2.5M if the researcher relocates to Europe from abroad).
