EXIST Forschungstransfer is the more intensive phase of the EXIST program, designed for spin-off projects that require substantial R&D to reach market readiness — typically deep tech with long development cycles. It runs in two phases: Phase 1 (up to 18 months, ~€180K+) funds R&D within the research institution; Phase 2 (up to 18 months) provides further support after company formation. Funding is significantly higher than the Gründerstipendium and requires a detailed technical and business plan. The host university applies on behalf of the team. Particularly suited to hardware, biotech, and materials science spin-offs.
