SPRIND (Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen) is Germany’s federal agency for disruptive innovation, modeled on DARPA and ARPA-E. It identifies and funds ‘radical innovations’ that are too high-risk and long-horizon for incumbent companies or standard public funding. SPRIND runs themed challenge competitions where teams compete for milestone-based funding ranging from €100K to €10M+. Grants are non-repayable and outcome-driven. Crucially, SPRIND is nationality-agnostic — non-German and non-EU startups can and do receive funding, as long as they respond to a published challenge. SPRIND does not accept general applications; teams must respond to specific published challenges. It also has a Facilitation unit that helps innovators navigate legal and regulatory barriers.
