ZIM (Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand) is Germany’s largest and most accessible innovation funding program, administered by BMWK. It supports R&D projects by German SMEs (and startups) across all technology sectors and industries. Three funding forms: solo R&D projects (company alone), cooperative R&D projects (company + research institution), and R&D cooperation networks. The subsidy covers 45–55% of eligible R&D costs up to €380K per company per project. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with evaluation taking roughly 3 months. There is no thematic restriction — any technologically novel project qualifies.
